What Kansas Summers Do to Your Air Conditioner
Cooling demand across our service area is not uniform, and the differences are large enough to affect both equipment sizing and expected service life.
Salina experiences more days at or above 90°F and significantly more days at or above 100°F than Wichita, so air conditioners in that market often work harder during peak summer conditions. Wichita, however, accumulates slightly more cooling degree days over the course of the season, resulting in a longer overall cooling load. The average first 90-degree day in Wichita arrives around May 22, while the average last occurs around September 28 — roughly four months of sustained cooling demand and a reminder to schedule maintenance before the season is underway rather than during it.
Kansas adds a second challenge beyond heat. Spring winds carry dust, pollen counts run high, and cottonwood seed blankets much of the region in early summer. All three collect on outdoor condenser coils, and a dirty coil cannot reject heat efficiently. The result is reduced performance, higher operating costs, and, in some cases, frozen evaporator coils or mid-summer breakdowns.
R-410A, R-454B, and What the Refrigerant Change Means
Under the EPA's Technology Transitions Rule, issued pursuant to the AIM Act of 2020, the manufacture and import of new residential split-system air conditioners and heat pumps using refrigerants with a GWP above 700 ended on January 1, 2025. R-410A has a GWP of 2,088, which is why most newly manufactured systems now use R-454B or R-32.
What this does not mean is that R-410A has been banned. The rule applies to the manufacture and import of new equipment; it does not prohibit the refrigerant itself, the sale of existing equipment inventory, or the servicing of installed systems. If your current system uses R-410A and is operating properly, there is no regulatory requirement to replace it. Continue maintaining it as you normally would.
If a contractor claims that a functioning R-410A system must be replaced solely because of the refrigerant transition, it is worth seeking a second opinion.

Once a year, in early to mid spring before peak demand — the Department of Energy and every major manufacturer agree on that cadence. Homes with pets or in dusty conditions do better with two visits, spring and fall. An unmaintained system loses efficiency steadily and can give up a significant share of its useful service life.
The factors that actually decide it are age, refrigerant, and which component failed. Repair usually makes sense for a capacitor, contactor, blower motor, or control board on a system under ten years old. Replacement deserves serious consideration for a compressor or evaporator coil failure, a system past fifteen years, a third service call in two seasons, or any unit still running on R-22 that develops a refrigerant leak — R-22 is no longer manufactured and is genuinely scarce.
Capacity is rated in tons, where one ton equals 12,000 BTU. Rules of thumb based on square footage are only a starting point — accurate sizing requires an ACCA Manual J load calculation accounting for insulation, window type and orientation, ceiling height, ductwork condition, climate, and occupancy. An oversized unit short-cycles and leaves humidity behind; an undersized one runs nonstop and cannot keep up. We include a Manual J analysis with every replacement quote.
SEER2 replaced the original SEER metric in 2023 as the federal efficiency standard. Because SEER2 testing uses higher static pressure that better reflects real-world ductwork, ratings run about 4.5% lower than old SEER for identical equipment. Kansas is in the DOE’s North region, where the current minimum is 13.4 SEER2 for split systems. The Southeast and Southwest regions carry higher minimums. Ratings climb well past 20, with higher numbers meaning lower energy use.
